Reimagining Urban Mobility with Gender Diverse Perspectives.
A gender-blind policy approach to public transportation design can exacerbate climate change impacts by perpetuating gender-based inequalities. Women and LGBTQIA+ citizens often have different mobility patterns and safety concerns, and a lack of consideration for these factors may discourage their use of public transport, leading to increased reliance on individual vehicles. This shift contributes to higher carbon emissions and air pollution. Additionally, neglecting gender aspects can result in inadequate safety measures, negatively affecting gender-diverse communities’ overall well-being. A gender-responsive public transportation policy considers diverse needs, promotes accessibility, and encourages sustainable travel behaviours. By incorporating gender perspectives, we can enhance the effectiveness of climate mitigation efforts, reduce emissions and foster an inclusive and sustainable transportation system for all.
To address the intersection of gender, mobility, and climate change, the Climate Agenda has launched the Centre for Inclusive Transport – SangGati in Mawaiyya, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Situated a mere 5.5 KM from the city centre, Hazratganj, which serves as the hub for various commuter facilities, SangGati aims to bridge the accessibility gap. Hazratganj is well-connected with Metro-rails, buses, autorickshaws, and taxis, offering comprehensive services to the commuters. However, the scenario in Mawaiyya, just a 5.5 KM distance away, presents a stark contrast, underscoring the disparities in transportation infrastructure even in close proximity to the bustling city centre.
This striking disparity is not confined to Lucknow alone; rather, it echoes the reality experienced by cities across Northern India. The overarching goal of SangGati is twofold:
Firstly, SangGati aspires to reshape the ongoing mainstream discourse surrounding public transportation. The emphasis is on steering the conversation toward achieving social sustainability as a precursor to environmental sustainability. The objective is to instigate a paradigm shift in the way we perceive, plan, and implement public transport systems. By focusing on the social dimensions, SangGati seeks to ensure that transportation solutions are not only ecologically sound but also inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of the community.
Secondly, SangGati is committed to amplifying gender-diverse voices in the realms of policy-making and execution. Recognizing the underrepresentation of these voices in transportation initiatives, SangGati strives to bring about a transformative change. Through active engagement and collaboration, the centre aims to integrate diverse perspectives into the decision-making processes. This involves advocating for policies that consider the unique mobility patterns, safety concerns, and preferences of different gender groups. By incorporating these perspectives, SangGati endeavours to create transportation systems that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially just and equitable.
In essence, SangGati emerges as a catalyst for change, addressing the broader regional challenge while championing a more holistic and inclusive approach to sustainable public transportation.
